Massive Grass Fire Rips Through Winnipeg’s Transcona, Wreaking Havoc on Local Businesses.

Grass Fire Damages Multiple Commercial Businesses in Winnipeg’s Transcona Area

Winnipeg, MB – May 13, 2025

A fast-spreading grass fire wreaked havoc on Winnipeg’s Transcona area yesterday, damaging several commercial businesses and leaving local residents shaken. The fire, which broke out in the late afternoon, quickly spread across a large stretch of grassland, fueled by strong winds, and threatened nearby properties.

The fire began around 4:30 PM, in an area near the intersection of Day Street and Kildare Avenue. Local firefighters were quickly dispatched to the scene, but the intense heat and dry conditions made it difficult to contain the flames. By the time crews arrived, the fire had already reached several buildings, causing significant damage to multiple businesses in the area.

According to authorities, several businesses along Kildare Avenue, including a small electronics store, a furniture shop, and a popular local café, were heavily affected by the flames. Eyewitnesses reported seeing thick smoke and fire quickly encroaching on the buildings, with firefighters working tirelessly to prevent the fire from spreading further.

“We’re fortunate that no one was seriously injured, but the damages to the buildings are significant,” said Fire Chief Linda Bradford of the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service. “The fire spread so quickly due to the dry grass and strong winds, and we are still investigating the exact cause of the fire.”

The fire caused extensive damage to the exteriors of the affected businesses, with some structures suffering damage to their roofs and walls. Although the flames were eventually brought under control by 7:00 PM, the aftermath left business owners and employees dealing with the shock of the destruction.

Local business owners, many of whom had invested years into building their shops, expressed their heartbreak at the sight of the damage. “I couldn’t believe it when I saw the smoke rising. It’s devastating to see my shop, which I’ve worked so hard for, in such a condition,” said one business owner, who wished to remain anonymous.

Firefighters remained on the scene late into the evening to ensure that the fire was completely extinguished. Crews are now working with structural engineers to assess the extent of the damage and determine whether the buildings are safe for re-entry.

The Winnipeg Police Service is investigating the cause of the fire, though initial reports suggest that it may have started from an unattended campfire in a nearby field. Investigators are urging anyone with information about the fire’s origin to come forward.

In response to the fire, city officials have issued a warning about the increased risk of grass fires in the area, especially during the dry spring months. They are advising residents to take extra precautions when outdoors and to avoid lighting fires in grassy or wooded areas.

Although many businesses are closed for the time being, several have begun cleanup efforts and are working with insurance companies to assess the damage. Community members have already started rallying together to support affected businesses, with local fundraisers and donation drives being planned in the coming days.

“We’re a close-knit community, and we’ll rebuild together,” said another local business owner. “It’s tough right now, but we’re not giving up.”

While the fire may have caused significant damage, it’s clear that the strength and resilience of the Transcona community will help them recover and rebuild in the days ahead.
