Blue Jays’ Defensive Star Smashes Home Run in First At-Bat Post-Surgery

Daulton Varsho Homers on First Pitch in Return from Surgery

Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Daulton Varsho made an immediate impact in his spring debut on Friday, launching a home run on the very first pitch he saw. Varsho, who had been sidelined following rotator cuff surgery at the end of 2024, wasted no time reminding fans of his power at the plate.

His return is significant for the Blue Jays, especially given his defensive prowess. Varsho won a Gold Glove in center field last season, but his availability in the outfield for Opening Day remains uncertain. Whenever he is ready, his elite defense will be a major boost for Toronto’s pitching staff, particularly compared to George Springer and Anthony Santander, who are expected to start on the corners.

While his defense has always been a strength, Varsho’s bat has struggled in Toronto. Since joining the Blue Jays, he has hit just .217 with a .289 on-base percentage, though he has still managed to produce power, hitting 38 home runs over the past two seasons, including 18 in 2024 before his shoulder injury. A strong start this spring could be a promising sign for his offensive production.

The Blue Jays are looking to bounce back from a disappointing 74-88 finish last season. In addition to Varsho’s return, they’ve added key players like Santander, Max Scherzer, Andrés Giménez, Jeff Hoffman, and Yimi García. However, their inability to extend Vladimir Guerrero Jr. remains a major offseason setback, as the star first baseman is set to hit free agency at the end of the year.
