Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. set specific terms for a contract extension, including a February 17 deadline, as he refuses to negotiate during spring training or the regular season. With no deal reached, the two-time Silver Slugger winner is now on track to become a free agent next winter. This leaves Toronto with the option of trading their homegrown star before the summer trade deadline. Could the Detroit Tigers be a potential destination?
Guerrero is coming off an outstanding 2024 season, posting a .323/.396/.544 slash line with 30 home runs, 44 doubles, 103 RBI, and 98 runs scored over 697 plate appearances. He is set to earn $28.5 million in his final arbitration year.
FanSided’s Zach Pressnell proposed a potential trade scenario that would send Guerrero to Detroit in exchange for infielder Colt Keith, infielder Kevin McGonigle, second baseman Hao-Yu Lee, and right-handed pitcher Troy Melton.
“Even with such a strong return, the Blue Jays may still hesitate to trade Guerrero,” Pressnell noted. “However, if Toronto accepts the reality of losing him after 2025, a deal like this wouldn’t be entirely surprising.”
Guerrero is expected to be a highly sought-after free agent next offseason, hitting the open market at just 26 years old. Spotrac projects his market value at 12 years and $427 million.
