At the start of the offseason, the Toronto Blue Jays had to decide on their approach, and it’s clear they’ve made that decision. The real question now is whether their actions have been sufficient.

After a last-place finish, the Blue Jays had to address the future of their superstar, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. With the four-time All-Star heading into free agency next year, Toronto opted to go all-in on acquiring help to persuade him to stay.

The Blue Jays have certainly left no stone unturned this offseason, aggressively pursuing stars like Juan Soto, Corbin Burnes, and Roki Sasaki. In the end, they signed Jeff Hoffman, Anthony Santander, and Max Scherzer.

As of Wednesday, the Blue Jays were still vying for another big-name free agent, but that option has now been taken off the table, potentially hurting their chances to keep Vladimir Guerrero Jr. around.

Alex Bregman, the two-time All-Star infielder from the Houston Astros, has reportedly agreed to a three-year, $120 million contract with the Boston Red Sox. While it’s unclear how much Toronto offered Bregman, by the end of the weekend, the Blue Jays seemed to be long shots for the star.

Bregman is expected to start at second base for the Red Sox, despite being a career third baseman and winning a Gold Glove at the position last season. In contrast, the Blue Jays are projected to start 28-year-old Ernie Clement at third—an exciting but unproven player.

With Bregman now headed to Boston, the American League East is once again shaping up as the toughest division in baseball, top to bottom. And despite all of Toronto’s offseason moves, they may still find themselves near the bottom.

A lot can change by the time Guerrero becomes a free agent, but missing out on Bregman might have been the Blue Jays’ final chance to build a roster that could convince him to stay.
