Scott Cochran, the former Georgia football strength and conditioning coach, was open about his personal challenges when accepting the head coaching position at West Alabama. After stepping away from coaching in 2023 due to struggles with opioid abuse during his time with the Bulldogs, Cochran believes taking the job was his true calling.
“My personal struggles have given me a unique perspective that helps me develop players and prepare them for the next level,” Cochran shared in a statement to The Tuscaloosa News. “I understand players better than they understand themselves, and I feel like I have something valuable to offer through head coaching. This isn’t just a job for me; it’s a calling to help young men grow, both on and off the field.”
Cochran followed up with a standard coach’s statement in his press release.
“I am honored and grateful for the opportunity to lead the University of West Alabama football program as head coach,” Cochran said. “UWA has a rich tradition of athletic excellence, and I’m excited to work with our talented student-athletes, dedicated staff, and passionate community to continue that legacy. Together, we will aim for greatness and make our supporters proud.”
During his time at Alabama, Cochran was a key figure in Jalen Hurts’ development in the weight room, contributing to the quarterback’s success at the Crimson Tide. Cochran spent 13 seasons as a strength and conditioning coach at Alabama under Nick Saban.
West Alabama competes in the Division II Gulf South Conference, with notable alumni including Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill and former New England Patriots and Tennessee Titans cornerback Malcolm Butler.
For a Division II opportunity, Cochran landed one of the best. With his established connections in Alabama and Georgia, he’s in a prime position to recruit in a region abundant with talent.
