After a season that started with Super Bowl aspirations but ended in a tough playoff exit, the Detroit Lions might opt for a major overhaul instead of just minor adjustments.

One of their key struggles this season was establishing a reliable pass rush, particularly after star Aidan Hutchinson suffered a leg injury in October. Now, the Lions could have the opportunity to acquire one of the league’s top edge rushers. An insider has identified Detroit as a strong contender to land Myles Garrett, the Cleveland Browns’ standout, following his public trade request.

Lions Eyeing Potential Boost for Hutchinson

Despite attempts through free agency and the draft to find a reliable partner for Hutchinson, the Lions’ efforts have fallen short. Bryan Murphy of The Sporting News suggests that Detroit might make another push for Garrett, especially after the team showed interest in the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year during the trade deadline.

Murphy notes that Detroit could create one of the most formidable pass-rushing duos in the league by pairing Garrett with Hutchinson. This would address a significant weakness, as the Lions only tallied 37 sacks in 2024, ranking 23rd in the league. The lack of depth at the position became evident, particularly after Hutchinson’s injury, and the team struggled defensively in their playoff loss to the Washington Commanders and in a regular-season defeat to the Buffalo Bills.

Garrett Seeking Championship Glory

Myles Garrett made waves by publicly stating his desire to leave Cleveland, revealing on Monday that he’s looking for a new team where he can pursue a Super Bowl title. He explained that his goal has always been to win on the biggest stage and that while he loves Cleveland and its fanbase, he can’t settle for anything less than competing for a championship.

With competition expected to be stiff for Garrett’s services, the Lions are considered one of the best positioned teams to land him, with their close proximity to Super Bowl contention. The Buffalo Bills are also seen as a possible landing spot, with both teams possessing late first-round picks this year.

Sources suggest that acquiring Garrett could require multiple first-round picks, similar to the hefty price the Chicago Bears paid to acquire Khalil Mack from the Oakland Raiders.
