The Toronto Maple Leafs could position themselves for a long-term solution on defense by trading for Los Angeles Kings defenseman Brandt Clarke, especially after the young blueliner was scratched again.

While there’s been a lot of talk about the Leafs making a trade to boost their forward group, their recent three-game losing streak and struggles to score make a trade more urgent. But rather than just adding depth up front, if GM Brad Treliving wants to make a significant move and find his next potential superstar, acquiring Clarke could be the way to go.

Clarke would be a perfect addition for the Maple Leafs. The team’s defensive future is uncertain with their top four all over 30 years old, so Clarke would provide a much-needed long-term solution if they’re thinking beyond the present.

Drafted eighth overall by the Kings in 2021, Clarke has been scratched for two consecutive games, which is surprising given that he leads the team’s defensemen in scoring. Whether it’s a coaching decision by Jim Hiller to experiment or give Clarke a break, it’s been a curious move considering Clarke’s strong performance this season.

With three goals and 21 assists, plus 82 blocks and nearly three more minutes of ice time than last season, Clarke has shown growth. While acquiring such a high-profile player would likely come at a steep price, Toronto could benefit from making the move. Clarke would eventually take over from Morgan Rielly, who could be traded for additional reinforcements, offering the Leafs a younger, potentially more effective replacement.

Clarke is in the second year of his entry-level contract, earning just $863,000 this season and next. If Toronto can lock him up long-term, they could find themselves with a player who could be the next Morgan Rielly, but with more upside and success.
