The Toronto Maple Leafs, one of the NHL’s top teams, are not immune to trade rumors as the deadline nears. In their pursuit of more offensive firepower, they may be forced to part with certain players. According to The Athletic, forward Max Domi could quietly emerge as a trade target. Despite having an opportunity to step up as a center while John Tavares is sidelined, Domi has been playing on the third-line wing.
Domi, who recently signed a four-year contract extension with the Maple Leafs, has underperformed. In 40 games, he has managed only three goals and 14 assists, totaling 17 points. This is far below expectations, particularly compared to his performance last season, when he recorded nine goals and 38 assists for 47 points in 80 games.
“The Leafs have spent much of this season trying to squeeze more goals out of their lineup,” writes The Athletic, noting that head coach Craig Berube has urged Domi to be more aggressive in taking shots. Despite leading the Atlantic Division, Toronto remains focused on finding the right balance heading into the playoffs.
Domi’s NHL career has been marked by frequent moves, and that trend could continue if he lands on the trade block. At nearly 30 years old with over 700 games of experience, several teams might be interested in acquiring him. However, his lack of production combined with his $3.75 million salary makes him a harder sell this season. The offseason could provide more opportunities, as the expected salary cap increase might make his contract more palatable to other teams.
If Domi wants to stay in Toronto, he’ll need to significantly boost his offensive output—and quickly.
