BREAKING NEWS: Liam Coen Departs Tampa Bay Buccaneers to Join the Jaguars

Jaguars Eye Buccaneers OC Liam Coen as Leading Candidate for Head Coach Role

The Jacksonville Jaguars’ search for a new head coach took a significant turn after Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson declined the opportunity, leaving the team to focus on other candidates. Among the frontrunners is Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Liam Coen, who has emerged as a strong contender.

Coen is scheduled for a second in-person interview with the Jaguars this week, sparking speculation that he may be the favorite to land the job. According to Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times, the Buccaneers are preparing for the possibility that Jaguars owner Shad Khan and general manager Trent Baalke could extend Coen an offer as early as Wednesday.

“The Bucs are bracing for Coen to be offered the Jaguars head coaching job,” Stroud reported. “The Jaguars were highly impressed with the 39-year-old offensive coordinator during his initial virtual interview and view him as the best candidate to revitalize quarterback Trevor Lawrence’s career.”

A Proven Track Record

Coen’s first year as Tampa Bay’s offensive coordinator was a resounding success. Under his leadership, the Buccaneers’ offense ranked in the top five across several key categories in 2024, including total offense, scoring offense, rushing offense, and passing offense. The unit also excelled in situational football, ranking highly in third-down conversion rates and red-zone efficiency.

Tampa Bay quarterback Baker Mayfield was effusive in his praise for Coen, saying:
“Liam has done an incredible job. He’s taught us the details of the game and tailored plays to fit the strengths of the players. That’s what great offensive coordinators do, and he’s been phenomenal.”

Why Coen Stands Out for Jacksonville

Coen’s background as a long-time assistant under Sean McVay and his experience with developing quarterbacks—most notably Will Levis at Kentucky—make him an attractive option for the Jaguars. His innovative approach and ability to maximize player potential could be pivotal in helping Trevor Lawrence fulfill his potential as a franchise quarterback.

While the Jaguars are also set to conduct second interviews with Raiders defensive coordinator Patrick Graham and former Jets head coach Robert Saleh, insiders believe the position is Coen’s to lose. His vision for the offense and track record of success have reportedly impressed the Jaguars’ leadership.

What’s Next?

The Jaguars’ decision could come quickly after Coen’s second interview, potentially finalizing a deal by midweek. If Coen is hired, Tampa Bay will face the challenge of replacing a key figure in their offensive success.

With Coen at the helm, Jacksonville would hope to turn the page on past struggles and re-establish themselves as a playoff contender. For now, all eyes are on this pivotal second interview and what could be a defining moment for both Coen and the Jaguars.
