Forbort just completed his first season in Vancouver, scoring two goals and tallying 11 points in 54 games. He averaged 17:06 of ice time per game.
Forbort was primarily used in defensive situations and was a top penalty killer.
“Bringing Derek back for another season is an important move for our group,” Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin said. “His strong defensive play and solid work on the penalty kill really helped solidify our back end this past year. Derek has a strong voice in the room and some impressive leadership qualities, and we will look to him to help our team continue to grow and improve this coming season.”
Forbort, who played at UND from 2010-13, has suited up in 550 NHL regular-season games across 10 seasons. He’s played for the Los Angeles Kings, Calgary Flames, Winnipeg Jets, Boston Bruins and Vancouver.
The Duluth, Minn., product was set to become a free agent July 1.
Forbort was selected No. 15 overall by the Kings in the 2010 NHL Draft.
