Czech Hockey’s Presidential Mask: A Unique Symbol of National Pride

In the heart of Czech ice hockey culture, one tradition stands out as a powerful symbol of national pride and unity: the Presidential Mask. Worn by the starting goaltender of the national team during major international tournaments, this unique mask design pays tribute to the country’s president and showcases the Czech Republic’s deep-rooted love for both sport and state.

The tradition began in 2010, when the first goalie mask featuring a painted portrait of the Czech president made its debut at the IIHF World Championship. Since then, each new iteration of the mask has sparked interest and admiration — both for its artistic design and the patriotic statement it makes.

The 2025 edition of the mask, unveiled ahead of this year’s World Championship, features a striking depiction of President Petr Pavel, integrated with elements of Czech history and symbolism, including the national flag and the lion from the country’s coat of arms. Designed by renowned Czech artist Jan Marek, the mask is more than protective gear — it is a moving canvas representing resilience, leadership, and national identity

Wearing the presidential mask is an honor, said Czech goalie Lukáš Dostál. It reminds me who I play for — not just the team, but the entire nation.

As the Czech team skates into the global spotlight once again, the Presidential Mask remains a bold and unique reminder of the unity between hockey and homeland — a tradition that continues to inspire pride across the country.
