An Air France Airbus A380, en route from Paris to Los Angeles, was forced to make an emergency landing in Canada after one of its four engines suffered a catastrophic failure mid-flight over the Atlantic Ocean.

The incident occurred on September 30, 2017, approximately 150 kilometers southeast of Paamiut, Greenland. Passengers aboard the flight reported hearing a loud boom, followed by significant vibrations and a temporary drop in altitude. The aircraft’s crew promptly shut down the damaged engine and continued to operate the remaining three engines, diverting to Goose Bay Airport in Labrador, Canada. The Airbus A380 landed safely at 15:42 UTC, with no injuries reported among the 497 passengers and 24 crew members on board.

Photographs taken by passengers and crew showed extensive damage to the engine, including missing cowling and exposed internal components. The cause of the engine failure was later determined to be a crack in the fan hub caused by cold dwell fatigue, as reported by the French Bureau d’Enquêtes et d’Analyses ()

Following the emergency landing, passengers remained on the aircraft for several hours due to the remote location of Goose Bay Airport, which lacked facilities to accommodate such a large number of international travelers. Subsequently, two Boeing 777 aircraft were dispatched from Montreal to transfer passengers to Los Angeles.
