The Toronto Blue Jays have made a noteworthy move by bringing Kevin Kiermaier back, but not as their center fielder. This time, he’s joining the front office as a special assistant. His return follows Max Scherzer’s free agency decision and could play a key role in the Blue Jays’ efforts to strengthen their defense and build a serious contender.
At 34, Kevin Kiermaier retired after winning the 2024 World Series with the Los Angeles Dodgers, capping off a remarkable 12-year MLB career. Over 1,159 games, he posted a .246 batting average with a .706 OPS, collecting 905 hits, 95 home runs, 170 doubles, 60 triples, 378 RBIs, and 132 stolen bases. However, it was his defense that truly set him apart. With a career WAR of 36.5, his impact was driven largely by his elite glove work.
When it comes to defense, few outfielders in MLB history have been better than Kiermaier. He won four Gold Gloves and a Platinum Glove, led the AL in defensive WAR in 2015 and 2016, and recorded an astounding 175 Defensive Runs Saved—the highest by any center fielder since the stat was first tracked in 2003. With a career 26.7 fWAR, his defensive impact was undeniable.
The Blue Jays already boast a strong defensive outfield, and Kiermaier’s expertise could help elevate them even further. Daulton Varsho, who played alongside him in 2023, won his first Gold Glove last season and led all MLB outfielders in Total Zone Rating. The team also added Myles Straw, another Gold Glove winner, via trade. Meanwhile, George Springer and newly signed free agent Anthony Santander will cover the corner outfield spots, though neither is considered an elite defender at this stage of their careers.
In his new role, Kevin Kiermaier will work closely with Toronto’s outfielders at all levels, serving as a mentor and defensive specialist. His focus will be on improving their outfield defense through fresh drills, new techniques, and his wealth of experience. This could be especially valuable for younger players like Nathan Lukes, Davis Schneider, and Joey Loperfido, along with the team’s rising prospects.
The Blue Jays have been aggressive this offseason, making significant moves by signing Max Scherzer, Anthony Santander, and Jeff Hoffman, while also acquiring second baseman Andrés Giménez via trade.
Kiermaier had other post-retirement opportunities, including with the Tampa Bay Rays, but ultimately chose Toronto due to his strong ties with Ross Atkins and Mark Shapiro. If his defensive expertise makes an impact, the Blue Jays could take the leap from a solid team to a legitimate championship contender.
