Sheldon Keefe appears unlikely to retract the remarks he made in New Jersey.

New Jersey Devils head coach Sheldon Keefe recently addressed the media to explain his decision to pair defensemen Luke Hughes and Simon Nemec during a practice session. This pairing was first utilized in a game against the Vegas Golden Knights and maintained in subsequent practices. Keefe emphasized that the combination aims to leverage the unique strengths of both young defensemen, fostering their development and enhancing the team’s defensive dynamics.

Reflecting on a recent 4-2 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers, Keefe acknowledged the team’s struggles, particularly in special teams’ performance. He highlighted a four-minute power play that he described as the worst of the season, noting it drained the team’s momentum. Despite the absence of captain Nico Hischier due to injury, Keefe did not attribute the loss to any single player’s absence but stressed the need for better execution across the board.

Since taking over as head coach of the Devils in May 2024, following his departure from the Toronto Maple Leafs, Keefe has led the team to a 26-15-5 record, placing them second in the Metropolitan Division. His tenure with the Devils has been marked by strategic adjustments and a focus on developing young talent, aiming to build a resilient and competitive team.

As the season progresses, Keefe’s leadership and tactical decisions will be pivotal in navigating the challenges ahead and striving for playoff success.
