“Blue Jays vs. Mets: The Battle for Pete Alonso Heats Up – Here’s the Latest”

After the Blue Jays reportedly agreed to a five-year, $92.5 million deal with Anthony Santander, TSN’s Scott Mitchell noted that Pete Alonso remained an option for Toronto, despite their interest in re-signing Vladimir Guerrero Jr. However, MLB Network’s Jim Duquette suggested on SNY’s “Mets Hot Stove” that the Blue Jays are unlikely to pursue Alonso unless he opts against returning to the Mets this winter.
“Toronto is out of the equation for Alonso, I think,” Duquette said, per Jon Vankin of *Newsweek*. “While they’re reportedly focusing on offense, it doesn’t appear they’re targeting Pete Alonso. Another potential suitor for him is off the table.”

The Mets appear unlikely to make a significant bid for Pete Alonso this offseason. Jim Duquette suggested there’s no “mystery team” competing with the Mets for Alonso, while SNY’s Danny Abriano expressed skepticism about the Giants or Angels pursuing him.

Earlier, MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo reported the Mets are unlikely to offer more than a three-year, $70 million deal for the 30-year-old slugger, believing the offer to be fair with no competing bids. Some speculated the Mets’ renewal of Jesse Winker’s contract signaled a readiness to move on from Alonso. However, The Athletic’s Will Sammon noted the team is still weighing a potential course change regarding Alonso’s future.
“Despite the Mets’ stance in negotiations, Alonso still lacks a clear market,” Abriano said Tuesday. “New York still needs a big hitter to protect Soto in the lineup, so a reunion continues to make a lot of sense.”
If Duquette is correct, Alonso’s camp might consider reaching out to Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns to confirm if the previously mentioned deal remains available.
