Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell has a unique perspective on the New York Giants’ inner workings and philosophies, having started his NFL journey as a third-round draft pick for the Giants in 1999. During his time with the team, Campbell established himself as a hard-nosed tight end, playing through the 2002 season before joining his hometown Dallas Cowboys in free agency.
Campbell credited the Giants with shaping the Lions’ preparation for the 2024 season after two days of joint practices during training camp. “That was the first real taste of what to expect,” Campbell said. “I thought the Giants practiced hard, brought energy, and had a lot of juice. It was good for us to see that—it’s like now we know what it’s going to be like all season.” He praised his players for handling the intensity well, emphasizing that the Lions are ready for every team’s best effort, no matter the opponent or timing.
Under Campbell’s leadership, the Lions achieved a franchise-best 15-2 record in 2024, breaking their single-season win record with their 13th victory. Campbell’s connection to Giants head coach Brian Daboll runs deep—they previously worked together on the Miami Dolphins’ coaching staff in 2011. Daboll was the offensive coordinator, while Campbell served as tight ends coach under head coach Tony Sparano. The two teams have now held joint practices for two consecutive years, a tradition that could continue as long as Daboll and Campbell are at the helm.
Now, Campbell’s Lions turn their focus to hosting the Washington Commanders in the Divisional Round of the playoffs. After earning a bye, the Lions are gearing up for a loud, intense home atmosphere and a hard-fought performance. Campbell has been driving home one key message to his team: staying hungry. “It doesn’t matter where you’re at, where you’re seeded, or how many wins you’ve had,” Campbell said. “You have to stay hungry, and our team is hungry.”
With their eyes on a deep playoff run, the Lions are ready to take the next step under Campbell’s old-school, hard-hitting style of leadership.
