Alex Ovechkin was a force all over the ice in this game. Not only did he register a secondary assist on Tom Wilson’s power-play goal (his 12th assist of the season), but that assist also marked a significant milestone: Ovechkin tied Nicklas Lidström at 590 power-play points, ranking 12th in NHL history for that category.

Ovechkin’s performance didn’t stop there—he capped off his night by scoring an empty-net goal, his 20th of the season. This goal makes Ovechkin just the second player in NHL history, alongside Gordie Howe (22 seasons), to score 20 or more goals in 20 consecutive seasons.

With this milestone, Ovechkin is now just 21 goals away from tying Wayne Gretzky’s all-time record and 22 goals away from surpassing it. Reaching 20 goals in his 20th season is a testament to his longevity and consistent excellence in the league.

This achievement was also especially poignant as it marked the 20th time in Ovechkin’s career that he has hit the 20-goal mark and the 20th game for the Capitals in Nashville. At age 39, Ovechkin continues to defy expectations, getting closer to breaking Gretzky’s record as he enters the twilight of his career.

While he wasn’t the No. 1 stud in this game, Ovechkin’s performance remains monumental, and he’s inching ever closer to one of the most iconic records in sports history. Stay tuned as he continues his historic pursuit.

#2: Tom WilsonTom Wilson made his presence felt early in the game, opening the scoring with a power-play goal, his 19th of the season. This goal was a key moment in the Capitals’ 4-1 win, and it’s no surprise that Wilson’s nine power-play goals now rank him tied for third in the NHL, behind only Brayden Point (12) and Gabriel Vilardi (10).Wilson was set up by Dylan Strome and Alex Ovechkin, with Strome earning his team-leading 34th assist of the season. Strome has been a major contributor to Washington’s power-play success, having factored into 19 of the team’s 30 power-play goals, a remarkable 63.3 percent.

With the win, the Capitals extended their point streak to seven games (4-0-3), outscoring their opponents 24-16 during that stretch and converting on 36.8 percent of their power-play opportunities (7-for-19). Head coach Spencer Carbery was quick to praise his team’s effectiveness, saying, “I feel like our power play is one of those where it doesn’t matter how it looks, as long as it’s productive. And that’s exactly what our power play is doing right now. Sometimes it doesn’t look great, but when you’re scoring one a night, that’s delivering the goods.”

Wilson’s continued dominance on the power play has been crucial in helping the Capitals maintain their strong form as they move through this hot streak.

#1: Ethen FrankEthen Frank was the standout player in the Capitals’ 4-1 win over the Nashville Predators, scoring his first career NHL goal to give Washington the lead for good with just 11:30 remaining in the third period. It was a clutch moment for the 26-year-old, who has made an impressive early mark in his NHL career.Frank had already tallied an assist the previous night in a tough overtime loss to the Montreal Canadiens, and his performance against Nashville solidified his impact. The undrafted forward had a stellar AHL career with the Hershey Bears, recording 125 points (80 goals, 45 assists) in 161 games. His 80 goals since April 15, 2022—when he scored his first AHL goal—are the second-most in the league during that span, trailing only Samuel Fagemo’s 85.

With his goal and assist in his first two NHL games, Frank has become the 11th player in Capitals history to record points in each of his first two career NHL games, making his early success even more remarkable.

Frank’s strong play not only helped the Capitals secure the win but also added another exciting chapter to his journey, as he continues to impress in his first taste of NHL action.
