The Toronto Blue Jays have officially lost pitcher Hagen Danner, who was claimed off waivers by the Seattle Mariners.
Danner was placed on waivers by the Blue Jays in late December to clear space on the 40-man roster for Josh Walker, and as expected, he was claimed.
The Mariners confirmed on Wednesday that they have added Danner to their 40-man roster after claiming him from Toronto.
This is a tough blow for the Blue Jays, who were likely holding out hope that Danner would clear waivers. However, given his strong performance in the minors last season, it was always a long shot.
The 26-year-old pitcher impressed with a solid 3.06 ERA over 35.1 innings, which made his designation for assignment a surprising move.
Now, the Blue Jays will be hoping that Josh Walker can make an immediate impact this season, as they look to avoid regret over parting ways with Danner to make room for him on the 40-man roster.
This decision adds to a growing list of questionable moves by Blue Jays GM Ross Atkins over the winter.
If Danner continues to build on his solid 2024 season, he’s likely to get some major league action with Seattle this year.
