Toronto Blue Jays Allegedly Showing Interest in All-Star Closer

According to Jon Heyman of the *New York Post*, the Toronto Blue Jays are among six teams expressing interest in free-agent closer Carlos Estevez.

This interest is logical given that the Blue Jays lost longtime closer Jordan Romano this offseason. Additionally, with Romano’s injury struggles last season, the Jays’ bullpen was weak and remains a key area they’re aiming to strengthen. Toronto has already re-signed Yimi Garcia and will combine him with Erik Swanson and Chad Green. Adding Estevez would help reinforce the back end of the bullpen for manager John Schneider’s squad. There’s also the possibility that Yariel Rodriguez could transition from the starting rotation to the bullpen, further bolstering the relief corps.

Estevez, 32, is a former All-Star who represented the Los Angeles Angels at the 2023 Midsummer Classic. Over his career, he is 27-31 with a 4.21 ERA, though much of that was spent pitching at Coors Field with the Colorado Rockies. After joining the Angels in 2023, Estevez was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies in 2024, where he contributed to their postseason run before they were eliminated in the NLDS. Romano, ironically, signed with the Phillies this offseason.

The Blue Jays are coming off a disappointing 74-88 season, finishing last in the American League East. While they made the playoffs in 2020, 2022, and 2023, they have not won a playoff game since 2016. With a World Series title drought stretching back to 1993, the fanbase is growing increasingly frustrated with the team’s quiet offseason.
