Analyst Claims Blue Jays ‘Missed the Mark’ with One Crucial Player.

The Toronto Blue Jays are part of one of Major League Baseball’s toughest divisions, the American League East, and after finishing last in 2024 with a 74-88 record, they haven’t won a division title in nine years. Competing in a division that includes the New York Yankees, Baltimore Orioles, and Boston Red Sox, the Blue Jays need to stay aggressive to stay relevant.

However, despite the pressing need for improvement, the Blue Jays have made no significant moves this offseason. MLB analyst Mike Wilner believes the team’s struggles go beyond this year, pointing to a critical mistake they made in not locking up Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to a long-term deal earlier.

“I think the Blue Jays really blew it a couple of years ago in not locking him up,” Wilner said, via Foul Territory.

Wilner argues that the Blue Jays may have cost themselves hundreds of millions by failing to extend Guerrero when they had the chance. With the first baseman set to hit free agency after the 2025 season, the Blue Jays face the risk of either paying a much higher price to keep him or losing him to another team.

Guerrero, who debuted in 2019, has spent all six seasons of his MLB career with Toronto. In 2024, he played 159 games, hitting .323 with 30 home runs, 103 RBIs, and a .940 OPS. Not only have the Blue Jays failed to make significant moves this offseason, but they may also face the loss of their franchise player after next season.
