Recent Report: Blue Jays are contenders for 2024 World Series-winning free agent to strengthen their rotation.

The Toronto Blue Jays are reportedly interested in free-agent pitcher Jack Flaherty, according to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand. While several other teams are vying for his services, the Blue Jays’ willingness to spend could give them an edge in securing the right-hander. This comes after their pursuit of Corbin Burnes fell through, and their ongoing interest in Anthony Santander suggests they’re looking to strengthen both their offense and pitching staff.

Flaherty, who posted a 3.17 ERA and struck out 194 batters over 162 innings last season, recently won the World Series with the Los Angeles Dodgers. His addition would significantly enhance a Toronto rotation that has uncertainty, particularly with Alek Manoah recovering from Tommy John surgery and Yusei Kikuchi leaving for the Angels. With a rotation that finished 14th in ERA (3.95) and 17th in fWAR (11.0) last season, the Blue Jays are keen to upgrade as they try to bounce back from a disappointing 2024 campaign. They ended up last in a competitive AL East and face the looming challenge of Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette hitting free agency after the 2025 season.

Flaherty could be a key acquisition, offering a strikeout-heavy presence to complement an already strong staff with Kevin Gausman, Jose Berrios, and Chris Bassitt. The Blue Jays are hoping that landing a top-tier free agent like Flaherty could help them contend for a playoff spot and avoid another early postseason exit. However, whether Flaherty will join Toronto remains uncertain, though the team’s aggressive pursuit of high-profile talent like Anthony Santander and Alex Bregman indicates they are ready to make a move.
