The Detroit Lions are entering the playoffs with one of the best records in the NFL, boasting a 14-2 record after their thrilling 40-34 victory over the 49ers on Monday Night Football. The team’s success is largely due to their high-powered offense, led by quarterback Jared Goff.
After the win, Lions head coach Dan Campbell praised Goff’s growth and maturity. He acknowledged the emotional significance of the game for Goff, who had family and friends in attendance. “This is a different Jared Goff now,” Campbell said. “He’s developed, matured, and is stepping into his prime. He’s playing at an elite level. You show me a quarterback playing better than him right now—I’d love to see it.”
Goff, who grew up in California, was moved by the support from both his family and the Lions’ fanbase. “It’s surreal,” Goff said about hearing fans chant his name in Santa Clara. “Our fans have been incredible on the road. It’s loud on third downs and really cool, especially being home with my family and friends.”
Campbell also discussed his decision-making heading into Week 17, admitting that he briefly considered resting some starters. “It’s a tough decision,” Campbell explained. “You can’t prepare backups as fully as you do the starters, and it’s not fair to put in an unprepared player.” He also stressed the challenge of sitting too many players, saying, “You can only rest six guys, and we came here to win. It’s a risk, but we were fortunate to stay healthy and now we move on to the next one.”
