Toronto Blue Jays infielder Vladimir Guerrero Jr. recently spoke about his contract extension talks this offseason. With no long-term deal reached, he is set to enter MLB free agency following the 2025 World Series.
There had been plenty of speculation about what Guerrero was asking for, but the four-time All-Star clarified in an interview with ESPN that his demands were significantly lower than those of Juan Soto.
“It’s much less than Soto,” Guerrero said. “We’re talking about many fewer millions than Soto, more than a hundred million less. … It was the same number of years (as Soto’s contract), but it didn’t reach ($600 million). The last number we gave them as a counteroffer didn’t reach 600.”
Following the news that he wasn’t seeking a $600 million deal, Guerrero responded cryptically to the Blue Jays’ latest social media post. After the team shared a hype video for the 2025 season, the star first baseman wrote a simple message on his Instagram story:
“2025 ,” Guerrero posted.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding his future, Guerrero appears focused on delivering a strong season for Toronto. Last year, he finished sixth in AL MVP voting, posting a 166 OPS+ and driving in 103 runs.
Now entering his seventh MLB season—all with the Blue Jays—Guerrero boasts a career .863 OPS, ranking 12th among active hitters. The 25-year-old also earned a Gold Glove in 2022, cementing his reputation as one of the league’s top two-way players.
The Blue Jays will kick off their 2025 season on March 27 against the Baltimore Orioles.
