I Was Terrified to Leave My House” — QPR Star Breaks Silence on Shocking Online Abuse…..

QPR winger Paul Smyth has opened up about the frightening impact of social media abuse, admitting it reached a point where he was scared to go out in public with his family.

The Northern Ireland international revealed that the online abuse went far beyond criticism of his performances, crossing into personal attacks that deeply affected his sense of safety and wellbeing. Smyth said the constant negativity made everyday life feel uncomfortable, with fears that the abuse could spill over from online spaces into real life.

“It got to a stage where I was worried about even going out with my family,” Smyth explained, highlighting how the pressure didn’t just affect him as a player, but also those closest to him.

The QPR star stressed that while footballers accept scrutiny as part of the game, there is a clear line between criticism and abuse. He called for stronger action from social media platforms and football authorities to better protect players and their families from targeted harassment.

Smyth’s comments add to the growing number of players speaking out about the mental toll of online abuse, reinforcing calls for greater awareness, accountability, and support within the game.
