Rangers fans are enduring a challenging summer as Philippe Clement and Nils Koppen strive to revive the club’s former glory at Govan.

The manager faces the additional hurdle of managing games away from Ibrox and the necessity to sell players before making new acquisitions, a situation highlighted by Rangers News as early as May.

Despite having funds available for transfers, the issue of approximately £9.2 million in annual wages tied up in players deemed surplus to requirements by the Rangers boss is a clear obstacle. While Clement acknowledges the need to trim the squad, the process is frustrating, and it’s understandable why he might feel let down.

Rangers chairman goes against his word in summer rebuild

At the Rangers AGM towards the end of 2023, John Bennett addressed concerns for the first time as the club’s chairman, asserting that previous spending decisions, particularly under Michael Beale, would not constrain Philippe Clement’s budget:

“I wouldn’t worry at all about the impact of last summer’s spending on Philippe’s plans. The club’s recent statement, emphasizing the football board’s role and process, underscores our commitment to a strategic approach rather than individual decisions.”

Despite assurances, Rangers face challenges in funding new acquisitions. Clement has had funds available, debunking claims of a nonexistent budget. Significant portions, like £4.3 million on Mohamed Diomande and similar amounts on Oscar Cortes, have already been allocated. Additionally, £1.5 million upfront for Hamza Igamane reflects a strategy of integrating new signings gradually.

However, the need to replace key players like Ryan Jack, Borna Barisic, John Lundstram, and Kemar Roofe on a tight budget complicates matters. Selling players such as Sam Lammers and Cyriel Dessers, while ideal, proves challenging due to varying circumstances.

Rangers may consider reducing asking prices or subsidizing wages to facilitate departures, but player willingness to leave remains a significant factor. Clement’s ability to recruit guaranteed starters could potentially motivate players to consider alternative options.

Under Bennett’s relatively short tenure, pressure mounts to balance squad adjustments with fiscal responsibility. Winning over fans necessitates strategic spending adjustments at Ibrox despite ongoing efforts to streamline the squad and wage bill.
