According to Jon Morosi of MLB Network, the Toronto Blue Jays are among the teams showing interest in free agent Willy Adames, who is coming off a standout season with the Milwaukee Brewers. Other teams reportedly in the mix include the Houston Astros, Atlanta Braves, and Boston Red Sox.
If the Blue Jays were to sign Adames, they would have several options for his role. One possibility is moving him to third base, a position he has expressed willingness to play in the right situation, allowing Bo Bichette to remain at shortstop. Should Bichette depart after the 2025 season, Adames could shift back to shortstop, providing the Blue Jays with solid insurance at the position.
This strategy mirrors what the Red Sox did in 2022 when they signed Trevor Story and placed him at second base, while Xander Bogaerts remained at short. After Bogaerts’ departure, Story was expected to move to shortstop, though an injury kept him from doing so.
If Adames were to play third base, it would also allow Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to stay at first, a position he’s played for years. Offensively, Adames would provide a significant boost to the Blue Jays’ lineup, complementing stars like Guerrero, Bichette, and George Springer.
Adames had an excellent 2023 season, batting .251 with 32 home runs and 112 RBI, helping to lead the Brewers’ offense, even as Christian Yelich was sidelined for part of the year. The Brewers went on to win the NL Central but were eliminated in the wild card series by the New York Mets.
A seven-year veteran, Adames has a career .248 batting average and 150 home runs, with his 32 homers in 2023 marking a career high.
