Derek Ferguson has praised Liam Kelly’s return to Rangers as a “great story” following the goalkeeper’s re-signing at Ibrox during the transfer window.

The 28-year-old rejoined Rangers this summer on a free transfer from Motherwell, having never played for the first team before leaving the club six years ago.

Kelly expressed that he couldn’t pass up the chance to return to his roots, as he never imagined getting another opportunity [Rangers Review, 13 July].

Ferguson, impressed by Kelly’s “excellent” form at Fir Park, compared his comeback to that of his former Ibrox and Hearts teammate Dave McPherson, who also made a notable return to Rangers.

Ferguson noted that, while Jack Butland remains the clear first-choice goalkeeper, Kelly’s signing is a positive development.

He highlighted Kelly’s strong performances in England and Scotland, emphasizing that his return represents a successful path for players who initially don’t make it at their youth club but can later earn a second chance by building a solid career elsewhere.

Kelly’s addition offers Philippe Clement a reliable Scottish Premiership performer to support Butland, especially after Robby McCrorie’s departure to Kilmarnock.
