Opinion: ‘Irreplaceable’ Gers star can’t be transfer no-go after previous £6m bid

Every player has their price. A football cliché as old as time and one that Philippe Clement is fully aware of as he looks to rebuild Rangers.

The manager must sell before he can buy, as a squad of 30 senior players is too large and too much money is sitting on the bench and in the stands every week.

Rangers are still being linked with new players, and both Joan Jordan and Cheikh Niasse would be shrewd acquisitions for the engine room. However, Clement has to make room first.

Rangers squad up for sale as Jack Butland remains priceless

Jose Cifuentes’ time in Scotland was a disaster. Tipped by Michael Beale to take Rangers to the next level, he offered very little and, despite being called up by Ecuador for the Copa America, his time at Cruzeiro isn’t going much better.

Kieran Dowell showed flashes of what he could do with a solid goal contribution return given how many minutes he played. However, against Ajax, he demonstrated why he isn’t a good fit for a system that demands energetic and more dynamic players in the final third.

The departures of Ryan Jack and John Lundstram created two spaces, but there are still too many players like Cifuentes, Dowell, and Tom Lawrence on big wages and not suitable for Clement’s philosophy.

Speaking after the 2-1 defeat to Ajax, the Gers boss reiterated that he is open to all offers:

“If there is somebody coming with the right amount of money we will see, we will discuss. But you always need to see and then you need to replace somebody and you need enough money to replace them to make it better, otherwise it is also of no use. It is finding a balance in that way.

“I think there is only one player that is irreplaceable at the moment that I don’t think a team will pay the money that he is worth, for sure, and that is Jack Butland. Everybody knows what I think about that.”

Butland shouldn’t be priceless if Rangers receive bids

Jack Butland should be on the list too. In January, Rangers turned down a £6m offer from Nottingham Forest with a potential domestic treble still a possibility.

If a bid in the reported £10-15m valuation arrives on Nils Koppen’s desk, it must be considered. Not only does it allow for funds to be reinvested in the squad, it gives leeway in terms of accepting offers for other players that might be lower than the club would want in an ideal world.

Ironically, Liam Kelly was probably Rangers’ best player against Ajax. A club can try to move players on all they want, but they have no control over where bids come from or if a player wants to leave.

Jack Butland is probably the best player in Rangers’ squad, as we saw in the cup final and against Ajax. However, he is only human, despite being “super.”
