The Toronto Blue Jays have had a busy MLB offseason. While the main story was their failure to extend Vladimir Guerrero Jr., there were still some positive moves for the team.
One such move was signing three-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer to a one-year, $15.5 million deal in free agency, strengthening their starting rotation. Although the 40-year-old Scherzer is no longer in his prime, especially in terms of availability, he still managed to post a 116 ERA+ over 17 starts for the Texas Rangers in the past two seasons.
Scherzer’s health has raised concerns in recent years, as the eight-time All-Star has only made 36 appearances since the beginning of 2023.
Entering spring training seemingly healthy, Scherzer received some positive news on Thursday. According to Sportsnet, the Blue Jays announced that Scherzer will make his first spring training start on Tuesday against the St. Louis Cardinals.
“Max Scherzer will take the mound alongside José Berríos in the marquee matchup against the Cardinals on Tuesday,” reported Sportsnet.
Given that Toronto invested $15.5 million in Scherzer for just one season, it’s promising that he’s healthy enough to start. The two-time World Series champion boasts a career 3.16 ERA and ranks second among active MLB pitchers with 3,407 strikeouts, just behind his former Detroit Tigers teammate Justin Verlander (3,416).
After making only nine appearances last season, Scherzer is focused on staying healthy as he begins his Blue Jays journey on Tuesday against St. Louis.
