Blue Jays set their sights on $119M Astros star as a potential backup option.

The Toronto Blue Jays are reportedly seeking infield help in free agency following Bo Bichette’s struggles in 2024 and with his contract set to expire after the 2025 season. One of their primary targets was Milwaukee Brewers shortstop Willy Adames, but he recently agreed to a seven-year, $182 million deal with the San Francisco Giants. With Adames off the table, the Blue Jays are now turning their attention to other infield options.

Chris Landers of FanSided recently proposed that the Blue Jays should pursue Houston Astros free agent Alex Bregman, who is expected to sign a four-year deal worth $119 million, according to Spotrac. “Now that Adames is off the board, the list of Blue Jays targets got narrowed down to one: Bregman is the only infield option remaining who can come even close to Adames’ offensive impact, and he’s now a necessity if Toronto wants to field a team capable of competing with the New York Yankees, Baltimore Orioles, and Boston Red Sox in the AL East next season,” Landers wrote.

While Bregman is one of the best infielders still available, he wouldn’t be the shortstop replacement the Blue Jays were originally seeking. Instead, he would likely play alongside Bichette at second or third base. Although Bregman would be a costly addition, the Blue Jays would have the financial flexibility to make a move, especially if they miss out on Juan Soto. While Spotrac forecasts Bregman’s deal at just under $120 million, his actual contract could end up exceeding $150 million.
