It seems the Baltimore Orioles are developing a growing interest in former Philadelphia Phillies players. After acquiring relievers Seranthony Domínguez and Gregory Soto at the trade deadline, the Orioles have now added another ex-Phillie to their ranks.

On August 9, Baltimore announced the signing of veteran infielder Jean Segura to a minor league contract. This move came as a surprise, considering Segura had been out of baseball for nearly a year after being released by the Cleveland Guardians in August 2023. Despite the Orioles not being in urgent need of infielders, even with Jordan Westburg sidelined, they opted to bring Segura on board.

Phillies fans will remember Segura for his standout years with the team from 2019 to 2022. Over those four seasons, he posted a .281 batting average with a .755 OPS, 228 runs, 78 doubles, 43 home runs, and 176 RBIs across 427 games. He was particularly valued for his clutch hitting and smooth defense, especially during the 2022 NLDS against the Atlanta Braves, where he hit an impressive .462 with a 1.149 OPS, helping the Phillies advance to the World Series.

Despite being a fan favorite, Segura’s rising contract demands led to his departure, as the Phillies aimed to save resources for a significant offseason acquisition. This strategy paid off when they signed star shortstop Trea Turner to an 11-year, $300 million deal.

In 2023, Segura joined the Miami Marlins, but he struggled, recording a .219 average and .556 OPS over 85 games. He was later traded to the Guardians in exchange for Josh Bell but was released shortly after.

Now with the Orioles, Segura is set to provide infield depth as he seeks to return to the majors. Phillies fans will fondly remember his contributions and wish him the best in his journey with Baltimore.
