Keith Jackson has suggested that Willie Collum might have clarified the handball rule following the Rangers 0-0 draw against Hearts.

In the print edition of the Daily Record (5 August, page 41), Jackson mentioned that although it’s speculative, the handling incident involving Connor Barron could signify a clearer interpretation of the rule.

VAR was also a factor, as it did not intervene, unlike in many cases last season in the Scottish Premiership.

Jackson wrote, “There’s not much difference between the teams; if Hearts keep hold of Lawrence Shankland, they might be in a battle for second place this season. And, whisper it, Willie Collum might have sorted out VAR and the handball rule.”

Philippe Clement still has work ahead at Rangers

The Gers and Hearts kicked off the Scottish Premiership season with their match over the weekend.

Despite numerous additions over the summer, Rangers did not have the stellar start they may have hoped for.

New signing Barron, despite the handball controversy, was actually one of the better performers on the pitch.

The game came too soon for Dutchman Robin Propper, but his experience will undoubtedly help strengthen the defense at Ibrox.

Even with many new arrivals, Rangers have significant work ahead if they aim to challenge Celtic this season. Brendan Rodgers’ side showcased their dominance with a 4-0 win over Kilmarnock, highlighting the gap in quality between the two teams.

While it’s early in the season, more changes may be needed to avoid repeating past outcomes.
