Ianis Hagi’s future has been a subject of discussion among Rangers fans this summer.

The 25-year-old Romanian international playmaker was once considered one of the brightest talents at Ibrox, with many hoping he had what it takes to reach the top of the game.

A creative midfielder with a keen eye for goal, Rangers fans still remember Ianis Hagi for his stunning double comeback against Braga in 2020 and his crucial role in their 55th league title. However, a cruciate ligament injury in 2022 severely impacted Hagi’s career at Rangers, and he has struggled to recover since.

After spending last season on loan with Alavés in Spain, speculation about his future has been rife. A transfer report from Romania now suggests that a return to one of Hagi’s former clubs might be on the horizon.

Hagi ‘agrees terms’ with his former club

After an extended break following Romania’s Euro 2024 campaign, many Rangers fans are speculating if Ianis Hagi might return to Ibrox training. This speculation comes after Hagi struck a six-figure deal with local media to cover his wedding back in Romania.

Recent reports suggest that Hagi is on the verge of leaving the Ibrox club. The pressing question is where his next move will be.

While there have been predictable links to Turkey—where his father Gheorghe is a legend at Galatasaray—it now seems a return to Italy might be on the horizon for the attacking midfielder. Romanian publication Sport pe Surse claims that Fiorentina have agreed on personal terms with Hagi ahead of a potential move.

However, the report also notes that it remains to be seen whether Fiorentina will meet Rangers’ asking price of €3.5 million (£3 million) for the player.

Hagi previously played for Fiorentina as a teenager, moving to the Serie A side from Viitorul Constanța in 2016 before spending two seasons with the club. Farul Constanta president Gică Popescu, who has links to the Hagi family, was tight-lipped about the interest, saying, “If I knew, I wouldn’t tell you. I don’t think you should talk to me, but to Ianis. So you should talk to him, maybe from tomorrow onwards.”

Rangers are holding out for a significant transfer boost.

Rangers have been transparent about their need to recoup transfer fees to support their own summer business.

Ianis Hagi, who is contracted to the club until 2026, is a valuable asset. The midfielder also commands a significant salary of €1 million (£850k) per year, or £16k per week.

Rangers have often struggled to get value for their players, so if they can recoup £3 million—the fee spent on Hagi in 2020—it would be considered solid business in a challenging summer.

Hagi was just a teenager when he previously joined Fiorentina, with his move to Rangers following a stint at Genk in Belgium. There may be unfinished business for Hagi in Florence, so it will be worth monitoring the situation closely this week.
