The Toronto Blue Jays missed the playoffs in 2024 and have struggled to sign the superstar talent they’ve pursued in recent years. With Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s free agency looming, a trade may be in the cards for the star player.

Not all teams will have the financial flexibility to acquire Guerrero and meet his contract demands. Newsweek’s Jon Vankin predicts that the Boston Red Sox could land Guerrero in exchange for Triston Casas.

“The team acquiring Guerrero would need to manage his contract and offer a replacement player for the Blue Jays’ lineup,” Vankin wrote. “The Red Sox, with their 24-year-old power-hitting first baseman Casas still under team control, fit the bill. Casas has actually been more prolific in the home run department than Guerrero, hitting one every 20 plate appearances compared to Guerrero’s one every 22.1.”

While the Blue Jays are committed to keeping Guerrero in Toronto, negotiations have hit a snag. Guerrero himself confirmed on Abriendo Sports that the two sides are far apart on contract terms. MLB Insider Héctor Gómez translated his comments on X.

“The offer they gave me isn’t even close to what I want,” Guerrero stated, revealing that he had already rejected a $340 million offer earlier in the offseason. He also credited Juan Soto’s contract for altering his own negotiation landscape.

“My numbers changed because of Juan Soto,” Guerrero said. “Ohtani’s deal affected Soto, and Soto’s deal is affecting mine.”

A trade sending Casas to Toronto for Guerrero would be a win for both teams. The Blue Jays would gain a promising young slugger, while the Red Sox could shift Rafael Devers to first base and slot Guerrero in at third. The Red Sox have already shown they’re willing to spend big, evidenced by their pursuit of Juan Soto.
