The Detroit Lions made several roster moves ahead of their Week 16 matchup with the Chicago Bears on Sunday. The team has elevated running back Jermar Jefferson and safety Loren Strickland from the practice squad for the game.

In addition, the Lions activated Ifeatu Melifonwu from injured reserve and signed wide receiver Tom Kennedy, outside linebacker Mitchell Agude, and defensive lineman Chris Smith to the active roster. To make room, the team waived safety Brandon Joseph and wide receiver Maurice Alexander, while defensive lineman David Bada was waived from injured reserve with an injury settlement.

Smith, Kennedy, and Agude have all appeared in games this season as practice squad elevations. Although Melifonwu has been activated, he is still listed as questionable for Sunday’s game against the Bears.

Jefferson, a fourth-year player, was selected by the Lions in the 7th round of the 2021 NFL Draft. After spending the past three seasons on the practice squad, he had a modest rookie campaign with 15 carries for 74 yards and two touchdowns. Both offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and running backs coach Scottie Montgomery have praised Jefferson’s progress, particularly in training camp and the preseason. He was one of the most explosive players during camp and now has the chance to showcase his talents on Sunday.

“Jermar has matured a lot since he first arrived,” Johnson said. “He’s had some ups and downs, been cut and brought back, but he’s really earned this opportunity. He’s a quiet guy who just gets to work. You don’t hear much from him in meetings, but when you watch him on the scout team, you can see how seriously he takes his job. I’m excited for him to get a chance this week.”
