Daniel Jones is set to join the Minnesota Vikings’ practice squad after being benched and ultimately released by the New York Giants. His tenure in New York ended when he was moved to third string and replaced by Tommy DeVito as the starting quarterback ahead of Week 12. The Giants then honored Jones’ request to be released, and he became a free agent this week after clearing waivers on Monday.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Tom Pelissero, and Cameron Wolfe reported on Wednesday that Daniel Jones will now join Kevin O’Connell’s Minnesota Vikings. Over the course of his career with the Giants, Jones compiled a 24-44-1 record as a starter after being selected as the sixth overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. His lone playoff appearance came in 2022.

In 2022, Jones completed 317 of 472 passes for 3,205 yards, 15 touchdowns, and five interceptions, while also rushing for 708 yards and seven touchdowns. His performance earned him a four-year, $160 million contract extension. However, the 27-year-old never fully lived up to that lucrative deal. A season-ending injury in 2023, combined with ongoing turnover issues and a struggling offensive line—issues that had plagued him throughout his Giants career—ultimately led the team to move on from their former first-round pick.

Jones will now join a quarterback room led by Sam Darnold, who has found new life under head coach Kevin O’Connell—a resurgence that Jones will likely aim to replicate. The Vikings, currently sitting at 9-2, have been one of the surprise teams of the 2024 season and are in a strong position to make the playoffs.
