Leafs’ First-Quarter Grades Are In: Some Big Surprises You Need to See

After 21 games, the Toronto Maple Leafs sit atop the Atlantic Division with a 13-6-2 record, riding a four-game winning streak as the first quarter of the season draws to a close. It’s time for first-quarter report cards — and yes, while 21 games technically doesn’t equal a quarter of the season, we’ll let that slide. After all, your professor here wasn’t a math major.

With that in mind, here are the Maple Leafs’ grades for the first quarter. Keep in mind that these grades are based on preseason expectations and take into account factors like injuries.

Simon Benoit:
Benoit has been one of the Leafs’ pleasant surprises this season, continuing his strong form from last year. He’s formed a solid third pairing with Conor Timmins, providing physicality, improving his positional play, and becoming a more reliable presence in rush defense. While his underlying numbers could use some work, he’s been a functional No. 5 defenseman. Grade: B-

Connor Dewar:
After recovering from an injury, Dewar has yet to make a significant impact. Through five games, he has no points and hasn’t stood out in any particular way. While this can be attributed to low-event hockey, his presence hasn’t really translated into meaningful contributions. The Leafs have struggled with shot and chance differential when Dewar is on the ice at 5-on-5, and no goals have been scored for either team during his even-strength minutes through November. We’ll need to see more from him moving forward. Grade: C
