On Monday’s episode of TSN’s *OverDrive*, Bryan Hayes, Jeff O’Neill, and Jamie McLennan discussed Sidney Crosby’s future in Pittsburgh, especially given the team’s struggles this season. Before Crosby signed a two-year extension at the start of the year, there had been significant trade speculation surrounding the future Hall of Famer. While it’s clear Crosby isn’t looking to leave, both Hayes and O’Neill acknowledged that, while they know it’s unlikely, they would love to see him finish his career in Toronto.
When asked to suggest a hypothetical trade that could spark talks for the Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia native, McLennan didn’t hesitate.
“Since we’re just being hypothetical… I’d trade Sidney Crosby and Tristan Jarry for Joseph Woll, Easton Cowan, and two first-round picks—one because of Crosby’s contract term,” McLennan proposed. “It’s a package that might make Brad Treliving hang up the phone and say, ‘I can’t make that happen.'”
The consensus among the trio was that, right off the bat, there would be challenges due to the salary implications for both Crosby and Jarry. With multiple years left on their contracts, the Leafs would need substantial salary retention, which would undoubtedly raise the cost of the deal.
While it would be a spectacle to see Crosby wearing a jersey other than Pittsburgh’s black and gold, it’s highly unlikely to happen, and the now 37-year-old seems destined to finish his career with the Penguins.
