The Blue Jays faced several decisions this off-season about whether to non-tender various bullpen pitchers, including closer Jordan Romano, whom they ultimately chose to non-tender. They are also expected to non-tender Dillon Tate, making him a free agent. Tate was claimed off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles in late August last season, and after a brief time in Triple-A, he was called up to the majors, where he exceeded expectations.

Tate pitched just 36.2 innings last season between Baltimore and Toronto, posting a 4.66 ERA. Despite some struggles, the Blue Jays were impressed by his performance, which led many to believe he would be returning this season.

The Blue Jays have cleared about $9.5 million in payroll space for free agency, but now general manager Ross Atkins must make sure these moves pay off. The hope is that the team will use this newfound flexibility to sign relief pitchers who can help transform their bullpen into one of the best in the American League.
