The Toronto Maple Leafs may be eyeing a familiar face to fill their need at center, with NHL analyst James Tanner of FanSided suggesting a potential trade to re-acquire Nazem Kadri from the Calgary Flames. Kadri, who would fill the third-line center role, brings championship experience, having won the Stanley Cup with the Colorado Avalanche in 2022.
Tanner argues that the Leafs’ current center depth is a concern, citing recent games where David Kampf and Pontus Holmberg were used in the third-line center spot. With only two top-nine centers on the roster, the Leafs are thin at a crucial position for playoff success. Kadri, who has struggled on a rebuilding Flames team, could be available at a reasonable price, especially if Calgary agrees to retain some of his contract.
Kadri, currently in the third year of a seven-year, $49 million deal, has recorded 5 goals and 4 assists in 18 games this season. While his performance may not reflect his true value, Tanner believes the Leafs could upgrade significantly with Kadri at a relatively low cost, possibly with Calgary retaining some of his salary.
Kadri has expressed a desire to stay with the Flames, noting that it’s too early to discuss trade rumors and emphasizing his love for the city and organization. Despite the Flames’ rebuilding phase, Kadri is focused on contributing and helping the team surprise some critics.
