The Detroit Lions are strongly favored to beat the Jacksonville Jaguars in their Week 11 matchup at Ford Field.
Reports this weekend suggest that the Jaguars may part ways with head coach Doug Pederson, potentially as early as Monday, depending on the outcome of the game.
According to the NFL Network, “Inside the building, several sources indicate that a change, which might include moving on from both Doug Pederson and general manager Trent Baalke, wouldn’t come as a surprise. Conversations reveal that while Jaguars staff are continuing their work, there is an air of unease and a sense of impending change.”
If Pederson is dismissed, quarterbacks coach Mike McCoy, who previously coached the Chargers from 2013 to 2016, is expected to be the leading candidate to serve as interim head coach for the final six games of the season.
While changes appear likely, a lopsided Lions victory could accelerate the timeline for action.
The NFL Network also reported, “Whether it’s a major coaching decision involving Pederson, a front-office shake-up centered around Baalke, or a complete overhaul, those within the organization feel it’s almost inevitable following a potential loss to Detroit.”
The Lions have maintained a respectful tone toward their opponents all season. Head coach Dan Campbell, speaking on Wednesday, praised the Jaguars’ roster and coaching staff:
“This is a talented roster, good coaches. Doug (Pederson) does a really good job. I know Ryan Nielsen (Jaguars defensive coordinator) from New Orleans — aggressive defense, hard-nosed. But they’re a talented group. For us, it’s about improving, fixing our mistakes, and getting better each week. That’s where our focus is.”
