Trade Pitch Has Maple Leafs Acquiring Star $46 Million Defenseman in Blockbuster

The Toronto Maple Leafs, a top contender in the NHL, have been proposed to acquire a star defenseman to strengthen their blue line through a trade.

Using the PuckGM tool on PuckPedia, a user suggested a trade that would see the Maple Leafs obtaining Adam Pelech from the New York Islanders.

Maple Leafs receive:

  • Adam Pelech
  • Kyle MacLean

Islanders receive:

  • Simon Benoit
  • Nick Robertson
  • 2026 first-round pick

This proposed deal would be significant, as Toronto gains a defensive powerhouse and a gritty forward in exchange for two young players and a first-round pick.

Pelech, 30, is in the fourth year of an eight-year, $46 million contract. His addition would immediately enhance Toronto’s defense. Hailing from Toronto, Pelech would have the chance to play for his hometown team. So far this season, he has played 11 games, registering no goals but four assists.

MacLean could provide physicality as a fourth-line forward for the Maple Leafs. He has appeared in 16 games this season, recording no goals and two assists.

In exchange, Toronto would part with a first-round pick and Benoit, a reliable defensive player in the first year of a three-year, $4.05 million contract, who could potentially replace Pelech.

Meanwhile, Robertson, who has yet to establish himself in the NHL, could offer skill and scoring to the Islanders. The former second-round pick has struggled for consistent play and could benefit from a change of scenery.

Robertson Likely to Be Traded Robertson, who requested a trade earlier this year but ultimately signed a one-year deal with the Leafs, has recently been a healthy scratch. His name has reemerged in trade rumors. NHL insider Frank Seravalli mentioned on Daily Faceoff Live that Robertson is a prime trade candidate for Toronto.

Seravalli stated, “Nick Robertson was a healthy scratch this week… he remains a candidate to be moved if the Leafs can find the right value in return for him.”

Robertson has played 15 games this season, scoring just one goal.

Pelech Out Injured Pelech is expected to miss several weeks with an injury after taking a puck to the face and leaving a recent game. He has been placed on injured reserve.

Islanders defenseman Scott Mayfield acknowledged the challenge of losing Pelech but expressed confidence in the team’s depth: “We have a lot of depth in this organization, and guys can step up.”

The Islanders are also missing key players like Mathew Barzal, Anthony Duclair, and Mike Reilly. Head coach Patrick Roy stated that while the injuries are tough, the team must find ways to win, praising the leadership and resilience within the roster.

New York’s record stands at 6-6-4 to start the season.
