Storm coach Craig Bellamy appears poised to continue leading Melbourne for several more years, a decision reinforced by the appointment of Jason Ryles as the Eels’ head coach, according to Storm general manager Frank Ponissi. Ponissi emphasized that Bellamy, known as a “master coach,” has no intention of retiring anytime soon, asserting, “He couldn’t even spell retirement, let alone consider it.” Bellamy had previously announced he would coach until the end of the 2025 season under a unique five-year contract signed in 2022, which allows him to decide annually whether to extend his tenure.

Ponissi expressed confidence in Bellamy’s ongoing leadership, stating to the SMH, “He is coaching better than ever and could easily continue for another decade.” He acknowledged that Ryles, who joined the Storm in 2023, had the qualifications to be a serious contender for head coaching roles, leading him to seek opportunities elsewhere after Bellamy’s decision to continue.

Ryles, who began his coaching career at Wests in Wollongong after retiring as a player in 2013, also served under Trent Robinson at the Roosters and worked in coaching staff roles for both Australian and English rugby union teams under Eddie Jones. Ponissi believes Ryles is now prepared to excel in his new role at the Eels, highlighting his strong player relationships and calm temperament as assets that will be tested in his new coaching position.
