The Toronto Maple Leafs may make several roster changes in the near future, as GM Brad Treliving is weighing potential trades to address a looming roster crunch. According to David Pagnotta of *The Fourth Period*, four players have been identified as possible trade candidates. With defenseman Jani Hakanpaa and forward Connor Dewar set to return from injury and join the 23-man NHL roster, the Leafs will need to make room by moving someone out. Among those named as trade possibilities are defensemen Conor Timmins and Matt Benning, as well as forwards Calle Jarnkrok and Nick Robertson.
Matt Benning, who was acquired by the Toronto Maple Leafs in a trade with the San Jose Sharks that sent Timothy Liljegren to San Jose, has yet to play a game for his new team. In response to trade rumors surrounding his situation, Benning shrugged off speculation, saying, “That’s your guys’ job,” and added, “I don’t really look into that. Whatever comes, comes.” The veteran defenseman has appeared in seven games for the Sharks this season but currently doesn’t have a defined role on the Leafs’ roster.
Conor Timmins has become a regular on Toronto’s bottom defensive pair, but with Jani Hakanpaa’s return, his spot could be at risk. Rather than trade him, the Leafs may consider sending Timmins down to their AHL affiliate for more playing time. On the forward side, both Nick Robertson and Calle Jarnkrok have attracted trade interest. While Robertson remains a promising prospect, he has been the subject of trade rumors throughout the offseason and into the early part of the season. Jarnkrok, however, had not been considered a trade candidate recently. The Leafs, with a 7-5-2 record, sit second in the Atlantic Division with 16 points through 14 games, trailing only the defending champion Florida Panthers, who have 19 points in 13 games.
