Joe Lewis took a shot at “overweight” Kris Boyd, as the former Aberdeen goalkeeper delivered a playful jab at the Rangers icon.

Lewis, 37, retired last month after his departure from Aberdeen in 2023, but he’ll be in action for the Masters Football six-a-side tournament at Aberdeen’s P+J Live on Thursday, November 14. He’ll join former Dons teammates Russell Anderson, Eoin Jess, Kevin McNaughton, Derek Young, Jonny Hayes, Gavin Rae, and Lee Miller to compete against veterans from Celtic, Dundee United, and Rangers, with the Rangers lineup featuring ex-striker Boyd.

Lewis and Boyd faced off on the pitch during Boyd’s second stint at Kilmarnock from 2016 to 2019. Since then, they’ve maintained a lively rivalry in the punditry box, especially during matches between Aberdeen and Rangers in recent seasons. Following Aberdeen’s 2-1 victory over Rangers at Pittodrie last Wednesday, which extended their lead to nine points over Philippe Clement’s side in second place in the Premiership, Lewis took the opportunity to poke fun at Boyd, adding to their playful banter.

Ahead of their Masters Football showdown next week, the former goalkeeper playfully mocked Boyd once again, suggesting that fitness was never one of the goal-scoring machine’s strong suits during his playing career. Speaking to The Press and Journal, Lewis said, “I was trying not to mention it (at Pittodrie)! Boydy was a very good player.”

“But Boydy was overweight when he played, and he’s only a little bit more overweight now… so it won’t make much of a difference! He’ll definitely be looking to score against me, and I’m sure he’d love that. But I’ll be doing my best to shut him up.”
