Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill has been keeping a close eye on the paydays other elite NFL pass catchers are securing. In an interview with KPRC2’s Aaron Wilson, Hill expressed his happiness for his peers and hinted at his desire for a new deal.

“I’m very excited to just be part of the old wave, which was $30 million, and Justin Jefferson came and surpassed that. I’m very proud of those guys and happy for my teammate Waddle getting his new deal,” Hill said. “I’m 30 years old, also looking for a new deal. It’s amazing to see where I fit into that category.”

The Dolphins wrapped up the 2023 season with an 11-6 record but were knocked out in the first round by the Kansas City Chiefs. For the 2024 campaign, the team’s success hinges on securing home playoff games in Miami’s sunny weather, meaning their high-powered offense needs to rack up regular-season wins to aim for a first-round bye and home-field advantage in the AFC playoffs.

A healthy and content Hill will be crucial for a triumphant 2024 season for the Dolphins.

Additionally, De’Von Achane, who showed remarkable potential in his rookie season, is poised to be a standout player for fantasy football teams in 2024.

As Hill mentioned, wide receiver and teammate Jaylen Waddle secured a three-year, $84.75 million deal, including $76 million guaranteed.

Among the top five highest-paid wide receivers in the NFL, Hill is the oldest at 30, with the next closest being Philadelphia Eagles star A.J. Brown, who is 27. Hill signed a four-year, $120 million contract in 2022, making him the highest-paid WR at the time. His cap hit this season is expected to be around $31 million, accounting for 12% of the Dolphins’ salary cap.

The Dolphins, who have some financial flexibility, need to consider whether it’s worth giving Hill a raise to keep him happy.

GIVEMESPORT KEY STAT: If Tyreek Hill doesn’t get a reworked deal, his current contract is projected to deliver a $56 million cap hit in 2026 (Hill will be 32).

The Dolphins could still raise Hill’s salary while spreading the cap hits over future years. Although this would sacrifice potential rollover money, Hill is arguably their most important skill position player—and perhaps the most important player on the team overall.

Hill’s arrival in 2022 and continued dominance in 2023 have been pivotal to the success of the passing game. His deep-threat ability has also significantly boosted the running game, which finished fifth in total rushing, first in rushing TDs, and first in yards per rush last year.

With quarterback Tua Tagovailoa entering the final year of his contract and looking for a new deal as well, the Dolphins face a challenging balancing act to keep their key players content. If they sign Tagovailoa and Hill remains seeking a trade, how confident are the Dolphins in their ability to win without Hill?

The last thing the Dolphins want from their star veteran is a dreaded holdout.
