Breaking News: Arizona’s Offense Comes Alive in Nail-Biting Finish Against West Virginia! UCF Shocks Fans with Major Coaching Changes…..

In Arizona’s 31-26 defeat to the West Virginia Mountaineers on Saturday, the Wildcats achieved something they hadn’t done since their season opener in August: score three consecutive touchdowns.

Quarterback Noah Fifita noted that it “was probably the best rhythm we’ve had in a while,” even though the team fell behind by 18 points before mounting a strong comeback in the fourth quarter, ultimately losing by a single possession.

“There’s still a lot to learn from this,” Fifita remarked. “We need to start faster and support our defense. I’ll keep taking responsibility for that.”

To assist their quarterback, Arizona implemented a new protection strategy, which UA coach Brent Brennan stated was “better last week than the week before.”

Arizona quarterback Noah Fifita, left, threw from a collapsing pocket in the fourth quarter during the Wildcats’ Big 12 matchup against West Virginia on Saturday in Tucson.

Following the season-ending leg injury of redshirt freshman Rhino Tapa’atoutai, the Wildcats shifted standout right tackle and potential NFL Draft pick Jonah Savaiinaea to left tackle. Redshirt sophomore Michael Wooten, who originally filled in for Tapa’atoutai at left tackle, started at right tackle against West Virginia. Coach Brent Brennan noted that while Wooten is “a young player and inexperienced, he made some solid plays on Saturday.”

“Moving big Jonah to protect Noah’s blindside just makes sense,” Brennan added. “We felt that was the best lineup for us.”

To enhance the line’s experience, veteran guard Wendell Moe was shifted to right guard, with redshirt freshman Alexander Doost taking over at left guard. The Wildcats also utilized chip-blocking from tight end Roberto Miranda and running back Quali Conley. After allowing a season-high seven sacks against Colorado, Arizona managed to give up only two against West Virginia.

While the Wildcats recorded their fewest rushing yards (78) since their loss to Kansas State, Brennan expressed optimism, stating, “I think there was some progress in the offense.”

Additionally, star wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan attempted two passes during the game: one was a 14-yard completion to Fifita, while the second, intended for the quarterback, was bobbled near the goal line, denying Fifita his first touchdown reception as a Wildcat. This would have marked McMillan’s second touchdown pass, having thrown one to wide receiver Montana Lemonious-Craig against Utah last season.

“I think some of those plays were ones we wanted to call earlier this season but just didn’t get around to,” said coach Brent Brennan. “Whenever you get the ball in the hands of a special player, you create opportunities for something amazing to happen.”

In the two weeks leading up to the loss against West Virginia, McMillan was targeted a total of 13 times. However, against WVU, he saw 14 targets, finishing with 10 catches for 202 yards and a touchdown, breaking a six-game touchdown drought. This marked the third time in McMillan’s Arizona career that he surpassed 200 receiving yards.

According to Pro Football Focus, McMillan lined up 11 times as a slot receiver and 28 times on the outside, occasionally using motion before the snap to maximize his impact as a playmaker in Arizona’s offense.

“When you give the ball to a special player, good things can happen,” Brennan remarked. “I thought T-Mac played exceptionally well the other night. He’s been outstanding all year. When your top players show that level of effort and commitment, it really inspires the whole team.”

  UCF Adjusts Coaching Staff

UCF head coach Gus Malzahn spent his 59th birthday on Monday making significant changes to his coaching staff. Ahead of the Knights’ “Space Game” matchup with Arizona in Orlando, UCF fired defensive coordinator Ted Roof, and first-year offensive coordinator Tim Harris Jr. will now take over offensive play-calling responsibilities, as announced by Malzahn.

“These decisions were 100% mine,” Malzahn stated.

“What’s best for our team is always the priority. As a leader and head coach, that’s what you have to focus on,” he added. “I’m looking forward to navigating this process over the last four games.”

UCF head coach Gus Malzahn spoke during Big 12 football Media Days on July 10 in Las Vegas.

The coaching change at UCF comes after a five-game losing streak. Co-defensive coordinator and associate head coach Addison Williams will replace Ted Roof, who was hired in January after spending two seasons at Oklahoma. Roof’s final game at OU was a loss to Arizona in the Alamo Bowl last season. He and Malzahn previously worked together as coordinators under Gene Chizik at Auburn from 2009 to 2011, where they won a national championship.

“I’m a football coach first, but as a leader and head coach, I have to do what’s best for my team,” Malzahn stated. “This is the right decision for us.”

In the last two weeks, UCF’s defense has struggled, giving up 38 points to Iowa State and 37 points to BYU, with a combined total of 1,010 yards allowed. The Knights currently rank 12th in the Big 12 for total defense, surrendering just over 379 yards per game.

Arizona head coach Brent Brennan acknowledged that preparing for a team undergoing coaching changes can be challenging.

“It’s tough to implement major changes mid-season, so I expect some elements of their previous scheme will still be in play,” he said. “It poses a challenge, as what you see on film might not fully reflect what they’ll do.”

Brennan noted that his initial impressions of UCF’s defense indicate they have “a really active front.”

“Coach Malzahn has a long track record of success,” Brennan added. “We’re heading into a tough road game, and both teams have faced struggles this season, making this a hard-fought battle.”

Extra Points

Brennan commented on Montana Lemonious-Craig’s reduced playing time, stating, “We’re evaluating all parts of our team, and Chris Hunter has been performing well, so he’s getting more live-game reps. Montana remains an important player for us, but you’ll see Chris Hunter on the field more, too.”

For the Arizona-UCF game, the FS1 broadcast team will feature Dan Hellie (play-by-play) and Robert Smith (analyst).

Brennan also shared his favorite Halloween candy: 100 Grand bars, which he considers “incredibly underrated,” along with Sour Patch Watermelons and Starburst. He revealed that Spider-Man has been his go-to costume since he was four years old. “I’ve dressed as Spider-Man over 20 times, even before all the movies came out,” he said.
