Last offseason, the Toronto Blue Jays surprised many by making a serious push for two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani. Toronto advanced further than expected in the free agent process and was prepared to offer him a massive deal, though Ohtani ultimately signed a $700 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Reports suggest, however, that the Blue Jays were willing to match that price.
This offseason, could Toronto aim for another blockbuster signing? New York Yankees superstar Juan Soto is expected to command one of the largest contracts in MLB history, likely around $500–$600 million, and the Blue Jays are rumored to be a potential fit. Toronto could benefit from an outfield power boost, and adding Soto would be a huge win for the team while dealing a blow to the Yankees.
FanSided’s Zach Pressnell even labeled Toronto as a top “doomsday” destination for Soto from the Yankees’ perspective, noting, “Toronto was a major letdown this year, but they took a smart approach at the trade deadline by trading expiring contracts for valuable prospects. With a stronger farm system and the same core roster, they’re in a position to seriously pursue Soto… For the Yankees, having Soto in their division would be a decade-long nightmare, truly ‘doomsday’ for Judge and the Bronx Bombers.”
