After finishing last in the American League East for the first time in 11 years, the Toronto Blue Jays are eager to make impactful additions. With the World Series approaching, rumors about potential free-agent signings are heating up. ESPN’s Buster Olney indicated that a notable All-Star third baseman might be available, and the Blue Jays could be an unexpected contender for his services. On TSN 1050’s First Up, Olney discussed the possibility of the Blue Jays targeting Alex Bregman.
“He’s a proven winner, an excellent third baseman, and he would enhance their lineup,” Olney noted.
Bregman, 30, is finishing the last year of a five-year, $100 million contract with the Houston Astros. The two-time All-Star has received MVP votes in four of his nine seasons and was part of the 2017 and 2022 World Series-winning teams. In the 2024 season, he batted .260 with 26 home runs, recording a 6.9% walk rate and a 13.6% strikeout rate.
“The Blue Jays have been looking to solidify their third base position for the past couple of years,” Olney remarked.
“They previously made Matt Chapman a $125 million offer early in the 2023 season, and Bregman fits their needs well.”
Bregman is anticipated to be a sought-after free agent this winter, and the Blue Jays will face stiff competition for him. Their current third basemen collectively hit .259/.293/.409 with 16 home runs, ranking them among the league’s lowest performers.
“Houston wants him back, though they may have financial limitations,” Olney added. “Additionally, the Detroit Tigers, who are also in need of a third baseman, are a team to watch.”
Bregman would be familiar with the Tigers, as A.J. Hinch, his former manager in Houston, leads the team.
“They have considerable payroll flexibility, and given their late-season success, along with Hinch’s influence, I wouldn’t be surprised if they pursued Bregman to be a cornerstone player for their squad,” Olney said.
The Tigers made an unexpected postseason push, winning 32 of their last 48 games to finish 86-76. Like the Blue Jays, they also struggled at third base, posting a collective batting line of .234/.294/.350 and ranking near the bottom in home runs from that position.
