The Toronto Maple Leafs took to social media to announce the signing of a 6’3″, 213-pound defenseman following training camp.
On the same day they announced 21 roster cuts as they near finalizing their 2024-25 NHL lineup, the team revealed that right-shot defenseman Rhett Parsons has signed a contract with the AHL’s Toronto Marlies. Parsons joined the Leafs’ camp as a free-agent invitee after completing his fourth season with the WHL’s Medicine Hat Tigers. He participated in the 2024 Prospect Showcase in Montreal and worked hard in training camp, skating with Group C, which primarily featured non-roster players and prospects with limited chances of making the NHL team this season.
The 21-year-old played 68 games for the Tigers last season, recording 6 goals, 17 points, and 105 penalty minutes. Known for his physical play, Parsons fits the mold of a big, tough defenseman that Leafs GM Brad Treliving values.
It remains unclear if Parsons will start in the AHL or with the ECHL affiliate Cincinnati Cyclones, but his work ethic and commitment throughout camp suggest he’ll give his best effort, no matter where he ends up playing.
